Cliff House by MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects

This project is the first of a series of projects for a large 455 acre site on Nova Scotia’s Atlantic coast. This pure box in the landscape is precariously perched off a bedrock cliff to heighten one’s experience of the landscape through a sense of vertigo and a sense of floating on the sea. This strategy features the building’s fifth elevation - its ‘belly’.

This modest 960 square foot cabin functions as a rustic retreat. Its main level (16x44) contains a great room with a north cabinet wall, along with a service core. The open loft (16x16) is a sleeping perch. A large south-facing deck allows the interior stage to flow outward through the large windows.

So God has been smacking me in the face with all these opportunities this past year in college.

A. Summer job with SpringHill in Chi town starting next month.

B. Can you say getting paid for leading worship at a church!

C. Getting a Worship Leader position on staff at said college!

D. I have a wonderful girlfriend who challenges me constantly in my walk!

So I had this moment of complete revelation last night. Well maybe not revelation more of realization.

From the first day of theology class this semester my prof gave this metaphor for theology; “theology is like cooking, you need specific ingredients, measurements, steps to get the final product.”

I’ve taken this metaphor to heart and for the past few months spanning back to January I constantly try to make sense of it all.

Last night was different thought, but first I have to put this out there. To be blunt most of the time I appear to be brash and pretty outspoken. Unless you really get to know me you’ll probably never learn that I’m a very analytical person when it comes to the way I think. I try to be precise and decisive but at the same time very abstract, maybe that’s why some people think I’m stupid….

But anyway, I was out to dinner with a friend of mine. On the drive there we got into this whole conversation about bible translations and whether or not specific translations could be wrong. We both came to the same conclusion that God is bigger than the words on the pages, that the authority doesn’t lie in the Bible but God. Not to say that the Bible isn’t important but do you hold the book or the author to a higher degree. If the Holy Spirit chooses to speak to you that’s what it comes down too, it shouldn’t matter what translation you’re reading is.

So we got done eating and started the drive back to campus. Gastronomy was still on my mind, so the conversation lead to us talking about cooking. I started to just bring up all of these different memories and feelings that I hadn’t realized existed inside of myself regarding the subject. How as a kid growing up I had to learn to cook on my own for the most part, it was essential for me development physically and mentally to learn these skills. This got me thinking, for some people going to church and just having a giant bible study and being spoon-fed information was the way they connected to God. But for me, I’ve always questioned things, I’ve always wondered why we do specific things in church, why we even go to church, why the eucharist is so important, all of that stuff. Believe it or not from 5th grade to sophomore year of high school I was pretty much agnostic, I could’ve cared less about dealing with matters of faith.

But somehow all of these thoughts all of them relating to our relationship as Christians with God, lead me back to being a Christ-follower. Like I mentioned earlier cooking takes specific ingredients, it takes certain steps. Even if you did everything 100% correct down to the T, you could still get it wrong. But that’s the beauty of it all, there’s always the opportunity to try again. As it is with our relationship to Christ we’re given a multitude of chances, it’s figuring out what ingredients are necessary for you, your relationship with God is different than mine. The dish you’re cooking up is gonna end up tasting complex in other ways than mine is.
